Character Name: Katsuki Bakugo
Age: 16/17
Canon: Boko No/My Hero Academia
Canon Point: Post Mega Shigaraki Fight
Character Information: Here's a wiki!!

Personality:
My Hero Academia is the story of a bunch of bright, plucky students in a world semi-similar to our own, but where 80% of the population possess super human abilities dubbed 'quirks'. The students we follow are all bright eyed, kind kids who want to be the very best like no one ever was and other such shounen goals.

AND THEN THERE'S THIS ASSHOLE.

Katsuki Bakugo is brash, bold, in your face, and most importantly better than you, and will gladly, and loudly, remind you every chance he gets. This ball of sunshine is one of the top performing students of class 1-A at UA's Hero Academy course, and unfortunately can put his money where his mouth is. His canon ability is "Explosion", giving him the ability to create and manipulate literal explosions in the palms of his hand. This ability has given him an edge up on others in life from a young age, giving him a huge boost of confidence. Coupled with his nearly unrivaled desire to win no matter what, thanks to his hero worship of the #1 hero All Might, it creates for a kid with one hell of an attitude problem that will happily tear down anyone on his path to success.

But let's back up a bit. Bakugo's arrogance didn't come out of no where just because he happened to have a wicked cool ability. Lots of people have neat quirks! Unfortunately, as his mother points out later in the story, at a very young age Bakugo's peers and teachers would constantly praise him, and assume he was meant for greatness merely because of his natural talents. This caused him to get a rather big head, even while in elementary school. He'd often bully his then quirkless classmate, as by his logic, a quirkless loser can't compare to him, and isn't anything more than a bug that needs to be squashed. When that same classmate reaches out to help Bakugo (after he harmlessly slips and falls in a creek), rather than seeing it as a gesture of kindness, Bakugo sees it as a threat to his superiority. How dare a weakling think HE needs help?? This attitude stays with Bakugo all the way until high school, going so far as to suggest that his classmate kill himself for being a worthless quirkless loser, and threatening to pummel him if he DARES apply to the same elite high school as him.

Well that "quirkless" loser did apply and get in, with he and Bakugo as the only students from their humble middle school to do so. To add insult to injury to Bakugo's pride, just before this, Bakugo is attacked by and overwhelmed by a creepy sludge villain, and who was it to come to his rescue? The quirkless, worthless nerd! "You looked like you need saving," his 'friend' had said to him, just infuriating Bakugo more even while they were both in peril. The two ended up being saved by their idol, All Might, and while the quirkless boy was berated for running into danger, Bakugo was praised for having such a strong quirk and hanging on for so long, continuing the trend of adults inflating his ego.

It wasn't until he entered the hero's course at UA where Bakugo FINALLY started to nibble some humble pie. Back in middle school, yeah Bakugo was the biggest dog in the yard, but now at a prestigious high school, he quickly learned there were several students that far outclassed him in both sheer power and technique. And to make it worse, that quirkless friend had now mysteriously gained a powerful quirk of his own! This sent Bakugo over the moon in anger, and during their first combat exercise, he attempted to put his friend "in his place" by well, attempting to beat the hell out of him. His friend out-strategized him though, giving Bakugo his first true taste of defeat, and finally giving him a much needed wake up call about his place in the world.

Now all this said, you'd think this would end with "and soon, he became a humble, less prideful boy." NOPE. If anything all these incidents added fuel to Bakguo's metaphorical fire. . .but in a good way! Bakugo's pride is directly tied to his desire to win and highly ambitious nature. His rival has a powerful quirk now? Gotta get stronger and beat him!! His idol is the most powerful hero in the world? BAKUGO'S GOING TO BECOME STRONGER AND EVEN RICHER!! Over and over Bakugo demonstrates that he is a force to be reckoned with, and is 100% all bite with that bark. At the school's sport's festival, he gives a curt, short opening statement to the student body flatly stating "I'm going to win," utterly infuriating the crowd (and win he does!). However, even after winning, he is enraged that his opponent didn't go all out on him (how dare someone NOT fight him like they want to kill him???) and has to be restrained before he can accept the win. Even when doing something "nice" like acting as the drummer in a band so they can cheer up the student body, Bakugo is 1) coerced into doing so merely so he can prove he's a badass on the drums and 2) 'win' against the students that were soured by all the trouble his class had caused by getting them to genuinely enjoy the show (along with some guilt that will be touched on later). The point is, Bakugo's pride is a double edged sword that acts as one of his most powerful assets and something that holds him back from his full potential.

So far he sounds like a crazy, egotistical gremlin and well. . correct! But just like his pride, Bakugo's ambitious nature is what pushes him above and beyond. The further his rival progresses, the further Bakugo wants to develop. Even when his idol, All Might, tries to comfort him after that first defeat, Bakugo declares he'll become EVEN STRONGER than his idol, and he doesn't need his help to do so! He doesn't do anything half assed; at the sports festival, he only needs to place in the top four to move on, but Bakugo aims to utterly destroy his opponents, something his teacher notes sets him apart from others. He NEVER settles, and views others taking it easy on him as the worse kind of insult. Later on, a pro hero he's interning with tells him to "solve a crisis before him," and when Bakugo finally does, he declares so proudly while the hero is trying to have a touching moment with a family member. He's constantly moving from goal to goal, never satisfied, and always wanting to grow.

It helps that Bakugo, surprisingly, isn't just some crazy bloodthirsty meathead. He's actually incredibly intelligent, coming in the top ten of his class when it comes to grades, and he takes all his studies deadly seriously. He doesn't slack on studying (or slack on tutoring his fellow classmates), and is incredibly adept at thinking on his feet. Even though a lot of his fighting style is based on pure instinct, Bakugo is shown to make instant snap decisions and analyze situations almost on par with some of his genius teammates. He adapts quickly, and even early on when he was peak prideful and raging, he's shown to be able to read his classmates moves and pull off tactical counter-measures in the heat of the moment, proving there's a method to his seemingly madness. He's also highly observant, often picking up on suspicious or awkward behavior in others. Even in a dire situation, such as when he's kidnapped at one point, he was able to correctly predict that they didn't want him dead, and was able to bluff and stall for time until help arrived. Bakugo's intelligence often blindsides his enemies and for good reason--it's easy to assume such an overconfident loudmouth could just be some idiot! He'll happily use others assumptions against them.

The combination of pride, talent, and intelligence hilariously gives Bakugo one short fuse. He's a hot head with no filter, and doesn't hesitate to tell someone they suck and why they suck and also why he is superior in every way. He spits out insults left and right, and his catchphrase is basically "I'll kill you" at this point. His attitude gets him in a lot of trouble, and it isn't exactly comforting to citizens when this hot-headed loudmouth arrives on the scene. During a Rescue Mission test, Bakugo yells "GO SAVE YOURSELVES!!" to two 'citizens' pretending to have injuries, and is deducted points from his score for just, having such terrible social skills. Even pros have tried to help Bakugo with his social image, but Bakugo even yells at grade schoolers! His mouth isn't the only thing harsh about him either--Bakugo never holds back physically, and will casually, literally blow up in people's faces. He'll never intentionally kill anyone, but as far as he's concerned, if his opponents are still conscious, they can continue to take a beating.

Now, despite his less than stellar personality, Bakugo IS in fact, a heroic person, possessing a courageous spirit, and an overwhelming confidence that ends up giving him an uncanny charisma that puts him in a position of leadership multiple times. Over time his schoolmates come to see him as a reliable, powerful ally, and Bakugo's passionate desire to win proves to be infectious to his classmates. During a team event at the sports festival, Bakugo forms a team with the intent to take out the top players--and he barely remembers the name of his classmates! Despite this though, his tenacity flowed over to this teammates and he was able to coordinate a victorious strategy using all of their strengths, and in return they put their faith in his orders. This becomes a reoccurring trend, as time after time Bakugo found his classmates tagging along with him without his consent, purely because they began to enjoy his company and trusted his judgement. This is also evident with his rival himself, as the formerly quirkless friend admits that his image of a hero is so tied to Bakugo that he finds himself unconsciously mimicking the rowdy boy when his desire to win outweighs his desire to save someone.

But Bakugo isn't just brave and heroic unintentionally. It's hard to tell due to the fact that half the time he's yelling "DIE DIE DIE" at someone, but he genuinely cares about the well being of others, and over time, actually makes genuine efforts to encourage his classmates. When the League of Villains first attacks their class, Bakugo springs into action immediately, wasting no time to attempt to protect his teachers and All Might as well, when he comes on the scene. He's also shown to carefully take his classmates into consideration before attacking an enemy--his explosions can cause massive damage, and he purposely will diminish the power rather than hurt his allies. Later, after obtaining his hero license, he and another classmate take out a big group of purse and wallet thieves. They make quick work of the thieves, but Bakugo also makes sure to pickpocket the thieves, ensuring the safe return of the stolen property and make sure it doesn't get burnt up by their attacks in the process. And in a moment surprising their other schoolmates, Bakugo demonstrates his leadership skills once again during a team exercise near the end of the semester--he makes a point to tell them to rely on him, but also openly asks them to have his back as well. To Bakugo, it's all or nothing, he wants to win with all his team, and demonstrates he will never hesitate to save an ally should they need him.

So yeah, as surprising as it may seem, Bakugo is exceedingly loyal. It takes a lot to earn his respect, but once you have it, Bakugo is a vital asset. Possibly his closest friend and classmate, Kirishima, started out a blip on Bakugo's radar, but over time forged a solid bond. It's thanks to Kirishima that Bakugo escapes from villains at one point, being driven to run and escape with his friend. Speaking of, at one point Bakugo is targeted by villains, as they hope to recruit him. It seems like they've won Bakugo over but surprise, he sends them flying with an explosion. Bakugo declares he wants to win only like All Might, and he's a hero through and through, he'd never turn his back on them. He also happens to overhear one of his teachers expressing this on TV, pleased that they actually understand how he feels. He also ends up dedicating himself to his former rival, sticking his neck out several times to protect him.

That all said, Bakugo's heroic leadership and gradual attempts to chill did not come overnight. Many incidents built up over time that eventually helped him chill the fuck out, and all are linked to a severe inferiority complex. It seems contradictory, for someone so shamelessly confident and full of talent, but it's the root of Bakugo's more sour traits. As mentioned, Bakugo heavily resented his formerly quirkless classmate, especially after said classmate attempted to rescue him. How embarrassing is that, having to be helped by a quirkless nobody! Who the hell does he think Bakugo is?! Bakugo felt weak and threatened, and this only heightened after the classmate beat him in their first fight. As his classmate grew stronger, Bakugo's resentment also grew, not understanding how some nobody could surpass him, and noting how their hero, All Might, seemed to favor his rival over him.

This all came to an unfortunate climax after Bakugo's class goes on a training/camping trip, and Bakugo ends up kidnapped by the villains. As mentioned, they had targeted him thinking his aggressive nature and desire to win meant he could be coerced to the side of evil, and ultimately, the Pro Heros and All Might, Bakugo's idol and #1 hero, ended up having to rescue him. In the process, due to an encounter with a powerful villain, it ends up being All Might's final fight, and the mighty hero loses the last of his power.

This was the metaphorical killing blow for Bakugo. In his mind, he was kidnapped because he was weak, and thus was the cause of All Might's downfall. This guilt and feeling of weakness hangs over Bakugo for months, and quietly stews at him as he never let's anyone know for quite some time. When he ends up failing at getting his Hero License on the first go, it pushes him over the edge, feeling even more inadequate and weaker than ever. He confronts his former quirkless classmate and spills his heart, confessing that he feels responsible for All Might's downfall, and hating himself for continuing to fail over and over when some nobody managed to surpass him and become the #1 hero's favorite instead. He thinks his classmate had been looking down on him this whole time, never putting together that the rival actually admired and respected him. He challenges the classmate to a fight to prove his superiority, and even though Bakugo ends up "winning," it still isn't enough. He won, but he still feels weak! He's still not good enough! However, this becomes a springboard for Bakugo, as he begins to finally understand his classmate and work together with him--as it's revealed to him that the classmate inherited All Might's abilities and Bakugo is now entrusted with the secret.

This is a turning point for Bakugo, and he begins to dedicate himself not only to bettering himself, but also showing his classmate tough love and helping to push his training while also keeping his secret. He still feels weak and inferior, taking every opportunity to prove that he's better (sometimes to a comedic extent--as he loudly proclaims he can already fly using his quirk so HA that's one point over his rival!!). He does still wish to atone for being such a bully in the past, and still hasn't forgiven himself for getting All Might hurt. Until he surpasses both of them, Bakugo will always consider himself a weak link.

So in short, Bakugo's a crazy hot-headed rude as fuck fight happy gremlin ready to let everyone know how awesome he is and how much everyone else sucks. . .on the surface. Beneath that prickly top layer is a highly intelligent, overly ambitious kid who deeply wants to become a hero and will always do what is right when it comes down to it. Each of his faults can be turned into a strength, and all of his strengths can be seen as restraints holding him back. It's a delicate balancing act that Bakugo's still struggling to reconcile with, but if he can, he really will become a great hero some day. Probably should stop saying he's going to kill everyone though.

Roleplay Sample:

You'd think becoming a flesh eating monster would hinder someone with dreams of say, becoming a heroic icon of the world. Well, maybe if they're weak babies!

As far as Bakugo is concerned, this is just a mildly annoying pit stop. Sure this whole new "monster" quirk is vastly inferior to his old explosion abilities, but he's not one to make excuses, and quick to adapt. Having fully transformed into his new manticore form, he'd already mastered flight, reeled in his newly enhanced senses, and balanced his feline-like limbs. If anything he was more equipped than ever to take down the bad guys, and if he wanted, he could strike down any unlucky soul that looked at him the wrong way. Any of the poor, quirkless nerds on the streets could be an easy meal. So what's a hero in training to do?

Whip them into fucking shape!!

The crowd the young hero had gathered wasn't exactly at ease with this young monster yelling at them and constantly threatening to kill them, but strangely enough, they couldn't hep but be entranced by his words--and it certainly wasn't the manticore's hypnotic powers at work. There was just something strangely charming about the rowdy child trying to teach the people how to defend themselves.

"All you dweebs run like old ladies browsing a farmer's market!!" the cat-like monster screeched. "Do you wanna die, huh?! I could've eaten you for breakast, lunch, and dinner by now!!"

He verbally tears into several people, correcting one's posture, telling another he'd get his head blown off if he keeps looking behind him to see if he's chased, asking why the hell any of them would be hanging out in shady alleys, etcetera. It's easier to protect people when they're not making dumbass decisions!! The crowd seems to take it to heart though, baffled yet grateful for the tips on how not to get mauled by a monster.

Bakugo rolls his eyes as one person begins to ramble on, asking inane questions about this or that (who the hell cares if a mermaid is sexy, if you're dumb enough to fall ofr that trap, you deserve to get eaten!!), but then his ears twitch, and his fur stands on end, eyes dilating. He doesn't bother to interupt the rambling lamebrain, instead cutting through the crowd in the blink of an eye. They gasp and part, wondering if the monster's hunger has kicked in or if he's given into his feral instincts. . .but that's not exactly it.

Pinned to the ground is a petty thief, having taken advantage of the crowd to do some easy pickpocketing. He hadn't counted on Bakugo spotting him--just goes to show what a low level baddie he is. Bakugo has his face shoved to the ground, claws out but not piercing his skin. Not that the little bit of mercy says much given the guy probably has a concussion now. "You think I'm gonna let you use me as a distraction for your lame ass petty theft? Tch, get a job, loser!"

He hisses at the man before letting him go, watching him stumble off with a bleeding head with little concern. Half of the crowd claps for Bakugo, while the other half give each other uncertain looks as the young manticore yells after the thief. "And if I catch ya around here again I'll kill ya!! I'll put your head on my wall!!"

The line between hero and monster sure is blurred nowadays.
